Brian Keith Caldwell, 19, of 3765 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, was charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with car breaking and malicious damage to personal property. Caldwell is accused of breaking into a 1996 Nissan while it was parked at 811 Main St., Buffalo. The incident occurred between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The victim told deputies she was at work and when she left to go home she found someone had entered her car and attempted to remove the radio. She said she also found that the center console and glove compartment had been broken. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $500.
A search of the vehicle turned up a cell phone which the victim said did not belong to her and had not been there when she got out of her car the night before. Deputies found that the phone belonged to Caldwell and went to his home on the Buffalo-West Springs Highway. They questioned him about his phone being found in the victim’s car and he gave them a written statement that he entered the vehicle and did the damage.
Caldwell was arrested and taken to the Union County Jail where he remained as of Thursday afternoon.
Assault charge
A Jonesville man is also in jail charged with attacking a man with a knife.
Christopher Shane Vaughan, 34, 2045 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, was charged by the sheriff’s office with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Deputies were dispatched to Vaughan’s residence Wednesday evening in response to a report of a fight in which one man had a knife. When they arrived, a woman came out of the building and told them that Vaughan had a knife taped to his hand and was jumping on another man.
Vaughan then came out of the house claiming he’d jumped on the other man because he had a knife after him. The victim then came out of the house carrying a hatchet, with blood on his face and clothes.
Deputies arrested Vaughan and the victim was transported to Wallace Thomson Hospital. A homemade glove made out of tape and a knife was found in the bedroom of the house.
Strong-arm robbery
A Union man told police he was mugged on his way to breakfast Tuesday morning.
The Union Public Safety Department is investigating the report of a strong-arm robbery at 304 O’Shields St. shortly after 6:30 a.m. The victim told officers that as he was going to his car to go get breakfast someone came up behind him, grabbed his throat and knocked him to the ground. The assailant then began hitting him, demanding his wallet. He then took the wallet from the victim’s back pocket and ran away down Mills Lane.
The victim said the assailant was a white male standing about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing about 110 lbs. He the attacker looked to be about 21 years old and wore a blue ball cap, blue jeans and a faded white-type shirt.
The wallet was a black bi-fold containing $75-$80 and assorted papers.
