CARLISLE — A trip to town hall could help some area residents beat the heat this summer, Mayor Mary Ferguson Glenn says.

Carolina Community Actions (CCA) is bringing its Emergency Cooling Program to the town hall every Thursday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. until September.

“These funds are available and we want people to take advantage of this opportunity to seek out this assistance,” Mrs. Glenn said. “We want people who qualify for this assistance to be able to apply for it without having to travel 28 miles to do so.”

The program gives priority to elderly, the disabled, households with children 5 and younger and households with incomes at 100 percent or less of federal poverty guidelines.

To apply for direct cooling assistance, a person must provide his or her Social Security card and one other form of state-issued identification; Social Security cards for all other household members; proof of income for the past 30 days; and a copy of an unpaid medical bill. Applicants are urged to call CCA’s Union office in advance of the day a representative will be in their community to receive information on the documentation they will bring with them and to schedule them an appointment.

CCA personnel will also be taking cooling assistance applications on the following days at the following locations:

• Every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Cross Keys Fire Department.

• The second Monday of each month from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Jonesville Senior Citizens Center.

• The third Monday of each month from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Adult Day Care.

• The fourth Monday of each month from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Buffalo Senior Citizens Center.

• The second Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Union County Housing Authority.

• The third Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Lockhart Senior Citizens Center.

• The fourth Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Kelly-Kelton Fire Department.

The CCA can also provide assistance to persons interested getting their GED, job skills upgraded, classroom training, employment and daycare.

For more information and/or to schedule an appointment contact the Union County office of Carolina Community Actions at 427-0336.
