Gaffney handles Union

Gaffney defeated Union 16-5 in seven innings on Tuesday in American Legion play.

“It was a real bad night,” said Union coach Jay Ford. “We were out matched. Gaffney’s a good ball team.”

Zack Owens pitched into the fourth for Union. Desmond Harp also pitched and Jake Walton finished. Post 22 gave up 16 hits and Gaffney had three home runs.

“They were killing the ball tonight,” said Ford.

Union had 10 hits. Anthony Smith reached on a walk and was hit by a pitch; Zack Owens had a single, reached on walk and was hit by a pitch; Michael Cobb had a single; Desomond Harp had a double and reached on a walk; Josh Simpson had a home run and a single; Tyler Adams had three singles; Delance Waddell and Jake Walton each had a single.

Union is still in playoff contention, but needs some wins. Post 22 travels to Inman tonight, hosts Greer on Thursday, Spartanburg on Friday and Gaffney on Tuesday.

“We’re still in there fighting for it,” said Ford.

JUNIOR LEGION

JONESVILLE — Rock Hill defeated Union’s junior American Legion team 9-6 on Tuesday.

Dylan Rogers (4-2) took the loss. Union had 11 hits — Day Day Gilkinson and Bubba Means each were 2-for-5; Taylun Wallace and Devonte Glenn each were 2-for-4; Ricky Rice, Rogers and Dustin Payne each had a single.

Michael Pattrick was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs for Rock Hill.

Union (12-4, 9-4) hosts Gaffney in a double header tonight at Union County Stadium. Two wins clinches first for Post 22. The playoffs start Monday.
