Lack of key hits costs Post 22

SPARTANBURG — Union left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings and eventually lost to Spartanburg, 12-8, in American Legion baseball Thursday night.

“We had our chances,” coach Jay Ford said. “We had 13 hits but couldn’t get a hit with men on base.”

Derek Gillespie started the game on the mound for Post 22 and was relieved by Desmond Harp in the seventh inning.

Union was leading, 8-6, at that point, but allowed Spartanburg to score six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Post 22 hitters were: Gillespie, base hit; Zack Owens, single and two doubles; Harp, two base hits, a home run and 2 RBI; Tyler Adams, double; Josh Simpson, a single and a home run; Cal Arnold, base hit; Jake Walton, two singles. Simpson has hit four homers in the past four games, including one against Gaffney and two against Greer.

Union entertains Inman tonight at 7.

JUNIOR AMERICAN LEGION

Union defeated York, 12-9, in 10 innings Thursday night in Junior American Legion action.

Post 22 was ahead, 9-2, but York tied the score late in the game to force extra innings. York had a runner at third in the eighth inning, but a good defensive play by Taylun Wallace ended the scoring threat.

Wallace’s double in the 10 inning knocked in a run and gave Union the lead. Day Day Gilkison capped win with a two-run homer.

Ricky Rice was the winning pitcher.

Union hitters: Bubba Means, 2-for-4; Keiston Bishop, 1-for-5, RBI; Rice, 1-for-6 (solo home run); Dustin Payne, sacrifice RBI; Wallace, 3-for-5, (home run, 4 RBI); Gilkison, 1-for-4 (home run 2 RBI); Dillon Rogers, 3-for-6, 3 RBI; Brian Gilkison, 2-for-4, RBI.
