Substandard building practices will soon be a thing of the past in Union County.

Last week, county council gave final approval to a long-overdue building code ordinance which establishes rules and regulations for construction. The ordinance states that no structure can be built or additions made to an existing structure without a permit issued by the county and payment of a fee.

Until now, Union County had no means of regulating construction, which allowed builders to do work that probably would not have met specifications in counties which had a building code ordinance.

Council also included $100,000 in the 2009-2010 budget for a building inspection office and an inspector, who will enforce the building codes.

The new ordinance will help protect local homeowners, ensuring they have a home that is safe and built according to standards.

Union is the last county in South Carolina to establish a building code ordinance. Now that we have one, it is hoped we can be among the safest.
