Darrell Gray Jr., 20, of 112 Faith Lane, was charged by the Union Public Safety Department with armed robbery and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a violent crime.
Darrius Marquis Gray, 19, of 107 Ravenscroft St., was charged with accessory before the fact to a crime.
Chief Sam White said the men are first cousins.
Officers were called to Li’L Cricket on 706 Lakeside Drive shortly after midnight. Enroute they were told that a man wearing a black sweater, black pants and white mask tried to get into the store while the clerk was attempting to lock the door.
The clerk told Sgt. Jermaine Smith he had set the alarm and went outside to lock the door when a man — later identified as Darrell Gray — approached him carrying a large, dark-colored handgun and told him not to move. The clerk said he went back into the store and Gray tried to pull on the handle to get in.
The clerk went behind the counter and saw Gray open the driver’s side door of his vehicle and take his wallet, which was in a bag in his vehicle. Gray then fled and the clerk called 911.
While officers were taking information from the clerk, Sgt. Russell Vinson with the sheriff’s office saw a green Lexus coming out of Lakeview Garden Apartments and the driver appeared to hesitate when he saw Vinson’s patrol car. The driver, Darrell Gray, then took off at a high rate of speed on Lakeside Drive. Vinson stopped the vehicle near Lakewood Drive. About this time, Officer Mark Gregory radioed Smith that he had found the clerk’s wallet at Building L under the stairs and he had seen the same Lexus parked near the building.
Cpl. Scott Farr saw footprints coming from the store to the apartments where the Lexus had been parked.
Vinson advised Darrell Gray and his passenger, Darrius Gray, of their rights and they and their vehicle were searched. A green leafy material believed to be marijuana was confiscated from Darrius Gray. Officers found a sweater fitting the description of the one the clerk said the robber was wearing.
Officers found a pair of latex gloves in the area where the wallet was found.
