WHITMIRE — A Whitmire man is facing drug charges after a search of his home turned up a quantity of cocaine.

Michael Bernard Epps, 52, 111 Vanlue Lane, was charged by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Epps was arrested May 27 after a search of his home by sheriff’s deputies and the Whitmire Police Department. The search turned up approximately 6 grams of cocaine; more than $1,000 in cash; drug paraphernalia including measuring scales; and a .22 pistol.

Major Todd Johnson of the sheriff’s office said the amount of cocaine found qualifies Epps to be charged with the intent to distribute.

“That would be a significant amount of cocaine,” he said. “That’s more than a person would possess for personal use.”

Johnson said that no weapons charges were filed against Epps because the presence of the gun itself was not illegal. He said no evidence was found to link it to any drug activity.

Epps was charged and released the same day on a personal recognizance bond.
