A Buffalo man was flown by helicopter to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Sunday night after the motorcycle he was riding struck a deer.
Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin with the Highway Patrol said the wreck that injured Eddie W. Newton, 37, of 249 Gin Circle occurred around 7:15 p.m. on Strother Road about 4 1/2 miles south of Union.
Gaskin said Newton was riding a 1994 Honda when he hit the deer and was ejected from the motorcycle. Newton was not wearing a helmet.
A spokesman at Spartanburg Regional Monday said Newton is in fair condition.
Timothy Calicutt, 28, of 120 Chandler Drive, Buffalo, was riding a 2005 Honda motorcycle with Newton. Both were westbound on Strother Road. After Newton was thrown from his motorcycle, it is believed he was grazed by Calicutt’s motorcycle, Gaskin said.
“We believe most of his injuries occurred from hitting the deer and falling off the motorcycle,” Gaskin said. “We think his serious injuries came from the initial collision.”
Calicutt was not injured, was not thrown off his motorcycle and did not lose control.
Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash and no charges will be filed, Gaskin said.
