Murder suspect Derrick “Black Jesus” Ruff is in custody in the Union County Jail.
Ruff, 28, who gave jailers an address of 52 Mason Road, Newberry, also is charged with kidnapping, armed robbery and first-degree burglary in the Aug. 18 home invasion and killing of 19-year-old Kelvin Davis on 147 Woodberry Drive.
Chief Deputy Perry Haney said U.S. Prisoner Transport Extradition Service brought Ruff to the jail early Thursday morning. Haney said the private company charged much less than it would have cost to send two deputies to Detroit, Mich., to take custody of Ruff.
Ruff was taken into custody by the Wayne County, Mich., Sheriff’s Office on April 2 after being caught in a marijuana bust. When authorities ran his name through the National Crime Information Computer a variety of Union County charges came up.
Haney said Ruff satisfied his Michigan charges and waived extradition.
Patrick Troy Rice, 25, of 617 Evans St., Whitmire, also is charged with murder, armed robbery and two counts of kidnapping in the case. He is being held in the Union County Jail.
Lt. Kenneth Riddle said officers want to talk with one other person of interest in the case. Four other people — Michael Rice, Sierra Braswell, Miriam Dickert and Laqueidra Eigner— have been charged with being accessories in the case.
Davis’ sister, Tensslie, told deputies she and her daughters were in bed when three black men woke them up demanding money. She said two of the men had on camouflage masks and the third had on a black hat that was pulled down and she could not see his face. At least two of the men had guns — one a pistol and the other a gun not as long as a rifle but longer than a handgun. Two of the men tied her up as they asked for money and car keys. She told them where her purse and keys were. They also wanted a “money box” but she said she did not know about it.
She said she could hear the suspects and her brother down the hall but could not see them because one of the men was blocking the door, pointing a gun at her.
Ms. Davis said as the suspects were leaving she heard one of them order that Kelvin be shot and used a racial epithet. She heard a shot and heard her brother yell. She said she waited a minute to make sure the men were gone, went down the hall and found her brother. She used her daughter’s cell phone to call 911. She said her purse had been moved from the kitchen to the living room and her cell phone, her identification and her debit card were gone.
Ms. Davis said her brother had been outside sitting in her car before she went to bed and he must have remained outside until the suspects arrived because there was no sign of forced entry into the house.
The report said the men left with the money box, which contained approximately $1,700.
Fixtures stolen
Someone took around $2,800 worth of light fixtures from the construction site of the new school on 2200 Whitmire Highway.
A report said an employee of H.R. Allen in Piedmont told Cpl. Wendy Childers Tuesday that 14 fixtures worth around $200 each were taken from the school. The report said the building is normally locked unless a construction crew is present — it was suggested that an employee from another crew may have taken the fixtures.
Monday, the theft of $3,400 worth of gutters, brackets and straps was reported at the construction site.
Other arrests
— Travelle Ray Jennings, 26, of 163 Hill St., Carlisle, was charged Tuesday by the Union Public Safety Department with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana within one-half mile of a school or park. Warrants signed by Investigator Mickey Parker said Jennings had in his possession a quantity of marijuana on Scott Street. He was arrested within one-half mile of the Perrin Avenue park.
— Cardozar Markie Hill, 21, of 204 Hicks St., was charged Wednesday by the public safety department with possession of crack with intent to distribute. A warrant signed by Parker said Hill had a quantity of crack in his possession on Foster Street.
— Jesse Blease Carter, 50, of 504 Toney Road was charged Wednesday by the public safety department with controlled substance theft. A warrant signed by Investigator Brian Bailey said Carter “exercised control over a controlled substance belonging to another person” with the intent to deprive that person of the substance on March 26 at Wal-Mart. The victim told Officer Dean Allen he was in the hospital and when he was released he went to the pharmacy to pick up his Xanax. He was told it had been picked up by someone else.
— Donald Shane Beheler, 18, of 107 Anderson Road, Union, was charged Wednesday by the public safety department with breach of trust. A report said the Wal-Mart loss prevention officer told PFC Eddie Williams that Beheler was caught taking $750 from a register and had taken money on prior occasions. The $750 was recovered.
Beheler told Williams he had been taking money from the store for about two weeks — around $2,340 — because he needed the money to provide his family with a place to stay. He said he was about to be evicted and he didn’t want DSS to take his children.
Vandalism
On 114 New St and 105 New St., victims told Officer Rusty Young that someone cut the tires on their cars. Damage was estimated at $200 on 114 New St. and $100 on 105 New St.
