Lamont Edney is comfortable in Union County, so he’s headed to Pikeville, Ky.
Edney signed to play college football at Pikeville on Thursday. He chose the Bears because the team has become home to several former Yellow Jackets.
Edney was recruited by former Jacket running back DeRail Sims. Sims played at Union High from 2001-04. He played for Pikeville from 2006-08, graduating with a history/political science degree. In 2009, Sims became inside linebackers coach for the Bears.
Other Jackets at Pikeville are: Kenny Harris (LB), Jamar Porter (DL), Jarvis Griffin (DL) and Travis Norris (DL).
“There are a lot of guys from Union up there and I’d rather be with people I know,” said Edney. “It’s a good school for me.”
Sims believes Edney can be good for the Bears.
“He has a toughness about him,” said Sims. “He has the quickness to be a good slot receiver for us. He’s a kid that’s going to work hard and do what he needs to do. He has a shot at a good career with us and will play early. He has a chance to make some noise. In four years, he’ll graduate.”
Sims added that Union players look out for each other.
Note: UCHS’ Sylvester Moore and Kendrick Brewton will walk-on at Charleston Southern. Clay Moore will walk-on at South Carolina.
