Mrs. Sheppard was born Dec. 26, 1941, the daughter of Alice Francis Mills and Anderson Worthy. She lived in Union County until the age of 7 when she moved to New York City with her mother and sisters to the Harlem section of Manhattan. She and her family moved to the Chelsea section of Manhattan in the mid-1950s. She attended and graduated from Washington Irving High School.
Betty married her long time sweetheart, Harold Sheppard, on April 28, 1962. Harold preceded her in death exactly six years earlier on April 19, 2003.
Betty was employed as an accounts receivable clerk until she retired in 2004. She returned to Union in 2005.
Surviving are a daughter, Nicole Sheppard; two sisters, Andrena Fargas of the Bronx, New York and Joann Monroe of Queens, New York; three aunts, Brooksie McCullough of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mary Lash of Carlisle and Dorothy Poston of Carlisle; a sister-in-law Doris Waters; four great-nephews, five great-nieces and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Wilie B. Titus. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
The family will have visitation at the funeral home frm 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. prior to the services.
