Two men were arrested Saturday after an off-duty sheriff’s deputy observed a drug deal in progress at a Jonesville convenience store parking lot

Donald D. Carson, 39, of 111 Stonecreek Drive, Spartanburg, was charged Saturday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with distribution of a Schedule 3 drug, possession of cocaine and having a container of alcohol with a broken seal in his vehicle.

Kelly Lee Crawford, 27, of 125 Bruce O. Wilson Road, Union, was charged with purchasing a Schedule 3 narcotic.

A report said Sgt. Russell Vinson, who was off duty, saw Carson hand something through the window to Crawford while they were in the parking lot of the Kangaroo Express on Furman Fendley Highway in Jonesville.

Vinson called Sgt. Dean Gibson — who was on duty — and asked him to come to the store. While the officers were on the phone, Crawford and Carson left.

Vinson followed the men into town and got into a patrol car with Jonesville Police and Fire Chief Jimmy Wilkins

At the Kangaroo Express on Main Street, Vinson saw that both Crawford and Carson were in Crawford’s vehicle. They left and traveled south on Highway 9. Gibson stopped the vehicle at the Brown’s Creek Church Road intersection. Vinson told the men what he had observed and asked for permission to search the vehicle. Officers found 30 white pills believed to be Hydrocodone under the console. A bottle of Hydrocodone that had a woman’s name on the prescription was found in the glove compartment. A bottle of Vodka with a broken seal also was found.

Crawford wrote a statement saying he purchased Hydrocodone for $80 from Carson.

Officers searched Carson and found a bag containing what is believed to be cocaine and also seized $166 from him. Carson signed a statement saying he had sold Hydrocodone to Crawford. Carson said Crawford gave him the cocaine to hide while they were pulled over.

In an unrelated case, Timothy Edward Millwood, 45, of 620 Peach Orchard Road, Union, was charged Friday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A report said officers served a search warrant at Millwood’s residence and recovered the illegal drugs. Millwood claimed all of the items. An underaged child who lived at the residence was released to her mother.
