CARLISLE — A political newcomer won a land slide victory over a former mayor in Tuesday’s special election for a vacant seat on the Carlisle Town Council.

Unofficial results show John R. Glenn received 85 votes or 89.5 percent of the vote to Radzil S. Thompson’s nine votes or 9.5 percent. One write-in vote was also cast.

Glenn, a volunteer firefighter with the Carlisle Fire Department, will serve the remaining two years of Mary Ferguson Glenn’s unexpired term. Mrs. Glenn resigned the seat after being elected mayor in 2008.

Thompson, who served on council from 1996-2000, was elected mayor in 2004 as a write-in candidate. He was defeated in his bid for a second term by Mrs. Glenn.

Poll worker Debbie O’Daniel said that the results of Tuesday’s election will be certified Thursday morning at the Union County Voter Registrar’s Office.
