Blue Ridge defeated Union County’s varsity girls’ soccer team 5-1 on Thursday.
Claire Dobson scored off a penalty kick in the second half for the Jackets.
Blue Ridge had 15 shots on goal and UCHS had two. Meredith Walker had seven saves, Danielle Harris, Shayna Williford and Megan Gregory each had one.
“Our lack of depth and experience at midfield put too much pressure on our defense,” said UCHS coach Terry Drum. “Our defense made several key and costly mistakes. It also denied our offense from ever getting on track.”
The Lady Jackets host Chapman on April 13.
BOYS SOCCER

Union County’s boys’ tennis team defeated Blue Ridge 4-3 on Thursday.
In singles play, No. 1 David d. David Hope 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Joseph Sawyer d. Medlock 6-3, 6-2; No. 3 Gysin d. Jacob Robbins 7-6, 6-3; No. 4 Brett Ayers d. Wells 6-2, 6-0; and No. 5 Andrew Adamo d. Rogers 6-7, 6-4 (10-7).
In doubles play, No. 1 David and Medlock d. David Hope and Joseph Sawyer 6-3, 7-5; No. 2 Aaron West and Seth McFarland d. Battenfield and Sudduth 6-1, 6-2.
In JV play, Jake Wilburn d. Smith 8-4.
“This was a sweet win, beating a team we’ve never beaten before,” said UCHS coach Tom Adamo. “The bottom of the lineup came through. Also, any time you can get a win out of your No. 1 or No. 2 spot, as Joseph Sawyer did, is a big plus.”
The Jackets (7-4) host York today.
UCHS SOFTBALL
Union County’s softball game against Riverside on Thursday was moved to April 15 due to rain.
BASEBALL
The Jonesville/Lockhart baseball game on Thursday was postponed to April 15. The game will be played at Jonesville. It will be a double-header and include Sims.
WHITMIRE JV
WHITMIRE — Newberry Academy defeated Whitmire’s junior varsity baseball team 9-7 on Wednesday.
The JV travels to Blacksburg on Wednesday.
