UNION — The Union Hospital District has a new CEO.
Paul Newhouse, who has been serving as the district’s Chief Financial Officer since mid-September, was appointed CEO by the district’s board following the resignation of his predecessor, Tim Merritt. Merritt tendered his resignation during a special called meeting of the hospital district’s board Thursday evening. The board then offered the position to Newhouse who accepted.
Newhouse said Friday that Merritt had resigned to take advantage of an employment opportunity in Atlanta which would be nearer to his home in Georgia. In addition, Newhouse said Merritt’s wife is taking special medical treatment in Atlanta and it would be more convenient for her for them to live in the area.
Merritt had served as the district’s CEO for two years. He could not be reached for comment Friday.
While he has spent the past six months as the district’s CFO, Newhouse spent a total of seven years as CEO at two long-term acute care hospitals, Regency Hospital of Cubbington and Triumph Hospital, both in Louisiana.
As CEO, Newhouse said he plans to work to reach out to the community and improve the quality of the health care services the district provides.
“The first thing is to really look at all our options,” Newhouse said. “We’ve got a plan in place we had put together to improve operations in the hospital.
“We’re going to focus on continuing service and I want to reach out to the community and make sure we’re meeting its needs,” he said. “A big focus will be on the quality of everything we do and making sure we are where we need to be.”
