UNION — An incident that began with officers responding to a case of reckless driving led to the seizure of $35,153 by the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the incident report, officers were on patrol in the parking lot of 719 N. Duncan Bypass (the parking lot of Union Square Cinemas and Shady’s Food and Spirits) in Union on Wednesday, March 6, when they observed a Chevrolet Caprice spinning its tires and leaving the parking lot at a high speed and in a reckless manner. Officers stopped the vehicle, and the driver — Ernest Lamont Jeter, 37, of 313 Lakewood Drive, Union — was placed under arrest for reckless driving.
Jeter then granted officers permission to search the vehicle, where they located a black case under the driver’s seat containing stacks of U.S. currency. Officers then found another stack of U.S. currency under the passenger’s seat along with a partially full Michelob Ultra beer. Officers also located a large sum of U.S. currency in Jeter’s right front pocket.
A K-9 unit was requested, and the K-9 alerted to the passenger’s side door, which contained more U.S. currency, and the center console which contained digital scales and white powder residue which field tested positive for cocaine.
Jeter was issued a summons for reckless driving and open container, and a warrant was signed for possession of cocaine because of the residue from the scales.
A total of $35,153 in U.S. currency was seized from the vehicle and Jeter. It was deposited in Union County Sheriff’s Office seized drug fund at the County Treasurer’s Office in the Union County Courthouse. It was noted that the currency — both from inside the vehicle and inside of Jeter’s pocket — was secured with black rubber bands. The scales with suspected cocaine residue was sealed for analysis at SLED.
