PIEDMONT — Strong pitching and a pair of big hits in the second inning helped Union County knock off No. 1 ranked Wren, 6-3 on Saturday in game one of a double header.

Left-hander Recus Hughes pitched seven solid innings for the Jackets allowing five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

He ended the game with three consecutive strikeouts in the seventh.

Aaron Bailey and Quay Cooper each RBI singled in the second inning and the Jackets plated three more runs off two Wren errors to take a 5-0 lead.

Wren picked up its lone run in the fifth off a RBI single but Union County pushed the lead back to five in the sixth inning when Hughes tripled and scored off Michael Todd Harris’ RBI double to center.

Wren took advantage of a couple Union County fielding errors in the bottom of the inning for the 6-3 final.

Harris 3-4 with RBI, Hughes, Cooper, Bailey 1 hit each.

Wren evened the series with a 9-1 win in game two. Union County took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Hughes doubled to center field and scored on a fielding error. Wren answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and used two hits, a walk and a sac fly to take a 4-1 lead in the fourth. The Jackets left a runner on in the top of the fifth and Wren tacked on five more in the bottom of the inning.

Hughes, Bailey, Cooper, Phillip King and Jimmie Johnson each had one hit.

Wren touched up Union County’s pitching staff for 10 hits and reached on eight walks. Harris took the loss from the mound pitching three innings. He gave up three hits, struck out three and allowed four walks.
