UNION COUNTY — For the second time in less than a month it looked a lot more like winter as snow made a brief return to Union County Saturday morning.
The county was transformed into a winter wonderland for the first time this year when a storm system brought three inches of snow on February 16. The snow began falling that afternoon and continued to do so until finally tapering off toward evening. With temperatures below freezing the snow remained in place throughout the night and into the following day before beginning to melt that afternoon.
Saturday saw snow return to Union County, but its stay was much shorter. The snow fell in large flakes Saturday morning, eventually covering the ground, trees, building and cars for brief time. The temperature, however, soon moved above the freezing mark, rapidly turning the snow into rain and melting and washing away most of the snow by the beginning of the afternoon.
Doug Outlaw, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Greer, said the storm that brought the snow to Union County Saturday morning was generated by an upper level system that crossed the Upstate from the northwest headed toward the coast. In most areas, Outlaw said the accumulation from the storm amounted to little more than a trace which was washed away later in the day due to temperatures that ranged from 36 degrees to 38 degrees.
“It lingered just a little bit on grassy areas but didn’t hang around at all,” Outlaw said.
Outlaw said that the county’s next chance for a wintry mix will be early Wednesday morning with the possibility of snow and rain. He said Wednesday will be the coldest day of the week with a high of 50 degrees. The rest of the week will see temperatures rise each with highs of 55 degrees on Thursday, 58 degrees on Friday, 60 degrees on Saturday, and 65 degrees on Sunday. There will be no chance of precipitation after Wednesday until Monday when there will be a slight chance of rain.
