SPARTANBURG — Basketball season came to a close for the Sims girls with a 22-12 loss at Gable on Thursday in the first round of the Peachtree Conference Tournament.

After taking the early lead in the first quarter, the Tigers were held to just two points in the second. Meanwhile, Gable found its rhythm and carried an 11-6 lead into intermission. Sims cut the lead to three points midway through the third period but were outscored 8-1 in the remaining nine minutes.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Brooke Smith with five points. Alexis Beatty, Aniya Byrd and Samiya Wood had two points each and Tay Booker contributed one point from the free throw line.

The Tigers finished the season with an overall record of 1-13, 0-11 in the Peachtree Conference.

Coach Kenny Harris said that although he’s disappointed to have won just one game this season, he is proud of the strides his team made between November and February.

“These girls began to play as a unit a couple of weeks ago and the rookies have really blended in with the veterans,” said Harris following Thursday’s game. “Games are won in the off season and on Saturdays in the driveway, or in the church gym or the YMCA by working on individual skills, especially dribbling and shooting. These girls have been a pleasure to coach and I encourage each of them to continue to work on their individual skills.”
