UNION —It was just across the street from the Southside Fire Department but that didn’t prevent an unoccupied house from being destroyed by fire early Thursday night.
Roger Bailey, public information officer for the Southside Fire Department, said the fire was just across the street from the Southside fire station which is located at 131 Lovers Lane Road.
“We received a call at 11:12 p.m. for a fully involved house fire at 132 Lovers Lane Road,” Bailey said Friday. “We called in the Monarch Fire Department, the City of Union Fire Department, Union County EMS, and the S.C. Forestry Commission. Calling in the Forestry Commission was unusual for us, but the house was in such an overgrown place we called them in to bulldoze around the building.”
Bailey said firefighters were on the scene for nearly two hours before the blaze was finally extinguished just after 1 a.m.
The building, which Bailey said was a total loss, was unoccupied and the identity of its owner unknown.
“This house was unoccupied and at this time the owner is undetermined,” Bailey said. “It was a $5,000 total loss.”
Bailey said the cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated by the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Southside was also one of the fire departments that responded to a fire that destroyed a house on Monarch Highway Wednesday morning. That house was also unoccupied and the cause of the fire that destroyed it is being investigated by the sheriff’s office and the SLED Arson Team.
While he did not know if there was link between the two fires, Bailey urged the public to be aware of what is going on in their community to try and possibly prevent more such incidents.
“This is the second vacant house fire we’ve had in three days,” Bailey said. “I would like to encourage neighbors to be very observant of their neighborhood and if they see any strange goings on to call the Union County Sheriff’s Office.”
