UNION — An upcoming play attempts to illustrate through spiritual drama and song that no matter how hopeless a situation may seem, “God Can Turn It Around.”
“God Can Turn It Around” is a new play — written and directed by Mary Owens — about a single mother of four children who experiences sexual harassment at work, loses her job and encounters one setback after the other from that point on. The character loses everything including her children, who are taken into DSS custody. She considers turning to a life of crime consisting of drugs and prostitution until her life is turned around when she is shown compassion for the first time.
Owens said the play will include moments of tears as well as moments of laughter, and the plot has numerous twists and turns. The point, however, remains the same.
“Our message is if you trust in God, God will turn it around,” Owens said.
Owens also said she believes this play is one to which anyone can relate.
“We all go through problems,” she said. “This is a situation where a single mother goes through trials and tribulations. Some people have already been there; some are there now. If you haven’t been there and you keep on living, you will be there one day. You have to submit yourself to God.”
Owens said her inspiration for writing the play came from talking with a lot of her cast members who have gone through their own trials and tribulations over the past year.
“Talking to them made me see as we have prayed and trusted in God, He has turned it around,” Owens said.
The group will perform the play at 5 p.m. this Saturday at the Pacolet River Baptist Association building located on Lovers Lane Road in Union.
Owens said several businesses have donated money to the group, and the money will be used to make a contribution to a special little boy in the community who needs it. The contribution will be presented during intermission of the play on Saturday.
