UNION — The Union County Arts Council is kicking off the 2013 Featured Artist Series with a selection of works by Spartanburg watercolorist Larry Mauldin.

Not only does Mauldin paint in a traditional watercolor technique, he also has perfected a method of painting using an airbrush instead of regular brushes.

“The airbrush was just an experiment to see what kind of colors and textures that I could get with it,” said Mauldin. “The result turned out to be a very graphic image using India ink for the blacks and grays while letting the white of the board provide the whites. Then the other colors are added using watercolors.”

Mauldin is the past-president of both the S.C. Watercolor Society and the Spartanburg Artist Guild. He is presently serving on the S.C. Watercolor Society’s governing board. He has taught art at the Spartanburg Art Center for 18 years and also teaches workshops throughout North and South Carolina.

He has garnered many awards over the years and was a juror for the 2003 North Charleston Spoleto Art Show.

“We are very lucky to have an artist of Larry’s caliber show his work in Union,” said UCAC coordinator Jackie Senn. “This is the perfect way to start our 2013 Featured Artist Series. We’re hoping to bring many more artists from other parts of the state to Union this year because we think that people in Union deserve to be able to view fine art in a gallery setting without having to drive to Spartanburg, Greenville, or Columbia. Our goal for 2013 is to make that happen.”

The Mauldin show will open Jan. 14 and run through Feb. 8. UCAC will host a reception for the artist from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at the UCAC gallery on Main Street in Union. Wine and light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
