JONESVILLE — A spin of the wheel could win some lucky Union County residents a prize from the S.C. Education Lottery at a Jonesville convenience store on Friday.
Reba Sumner, manager of Kangaroo Express 1507, announced this week at the South Carolina Education Lottery will be bringing its prize wheel promotion to the store.
“They will bring a wheel and customers can spin the wheel and win prizes,” Sumner said. “They normally have prizes like T-shirts and towels and sometimes they give away beach towels and can koozies. They also give away little carry bags that you can put things in.”
Sumner said this will be the first time the store has hosted the prize wheel promotion. She said she’d contacted the education lottery and requested it bring the promotion to the store.
“You can ask them and they will come,” Sumner said. “I called last month and said I wanted to do a promotion and we decided to wait until after the holidays.”
While a person must buy a lottery ticket at the store before they can have a spin at the wheel, Sumner said the main purpose of the event is to give the store’s customers the opportunity to enjoy themselves and possibly win a prize.
“Naturally we’ll sell a lot of tickets, but we just want our customers to enjoy it and have fun,” Sumner said.
The prize wheel will be at the store from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Lauren Leviner, sales promotions manager for the S.C. Education Lottery, said customers will get to spin the wheel for each $10 they spend on lottery tickets.
“Every time anyone spends $10 on lottery products they get a spin,” Leviner said. “It could be the scratch off games, it could be any of our online games like PowerBall, MegaMillions, Pick 3, Pick 4 or Palmetto Cash 5 just as long as it adds up to $10. If they spend $20 they would get two spins, if they spend $30 they get three spins. It’s just for every $10 purchase. We give out different types of promotional items like hats, coffee mugs, T-shirts or water bottle, but no cash prizes.”
Leviner said the goal of the promotion is to reward local retailers and their customers.
“It is a customer appreciation day for the customers at that store and in that area,” Leviner said. “The purpose is to reward the players and the retailers in that community for their support.”
Since being founded in 2002, the S.C. Education Lottery has raised billions for supplemental funding for education. During the past 11 years, the S.C. General Assembly has allocated $3.1 billion in the lottery’s net proceeds to support education and other programs including:
• $2.3 billion for higher educational programs which have provided more than one million scholarships to South Carolina students.
• $687 million for K-12
• More than $84 million for community education programs including funding for county libraries as well as the Allied Health Care Initiative, and gambling addiction services.
Julie Huffman, beneficiary communications coordinator for for the S.C. Education Lottery, said that during the past 11 years Union County has received more than $4.5 million in lottery funds for K-12 education; 9,781 scholarships valued at $12.8 million; more than $240,000 in allocations to the Union County Carnegie Library.
In 2012, four Union County residents won a total of $310,000 playing the various games of the South Carolina Education Lottery. Three of the winning tickets were purchased in Union County while the fourth was purchased in Spartanburg.
