A Union teen-ager is accused of shooting a man after an altercation that began at a local nightclub.

Fredrick Jermaine Bates, 19, of 49 West Apartments was charged Saturday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with assault and battery with intent to kill. He is being held in the Union County Jail on $25,000 surety bond.

A report said sheriff’s deputies and Union Public Safety officers were called to a shooting at Rose Hill Garden Apartments around 2 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they were told James Napper, 24, had been shot in the upper left arm. Officers talked with Napper before Union County EMS transported him to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. It was determined the shooting happened near the intersection of the Furman Fendley Highway and New Hope Church Road.

Officers could see that someone had shot into Napper’s vehicle, shattering the rear passenger window on the driver’s side. A small bullet fragment was retrieved.

Napper and witnesses said Bates fired the gun. A BOLO, or be on the lookout, was issued for Bates. He was located by public safety officers.

At the hospital, Deputy Roger Hill obtained a statement from Napper. Napper said the shooting stemmed from an argument that began at Club 176 and continued at the Kangaroo Express off the Furman Fendley Highway in Jonesville. Deputies had been called to the convenience store and dispersed a crowd there earlier.

Napper said after he left the store, someone in a car behind him began flashing lights at him. He pulled over and saw it was Bates’ girlfriend. Napper said they were talking when Bates pulled up and exchanged words with them. Then Bates shot him. Napper said he quickly pulled away and drove to his girlfriend’s apartment.

At the sheriff’s office, Lt. Terry Humphries took a statement from Bates. He then advised Hill to take Bates to jail and to travel North Pinckney Street so Bates could show Humphries where he had hidden the handgun.

Drug charge

Blake Everette McMillian, 20, of 121 Cedar St., Union was charged Friday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with distribution of marijuana.

A report said narcotics officers made a controlled marijuana purchase from McMillian while in a driveway on 141 Oak Grove Road in Union on March 13.

Burglaries and thefts

Someone took a Bobcat worth $15,000 from a building under construction for Jonesville Tire Shop on 2914 Furman Fendley Highway.

The victim told Sgt. Dee Haney Saturday that when he left the construction site earlier this month, he took the key and boss fuse from it to help prevent theft.

The victim said he believed someone drove a vehicle inside the building and loaded the Bobcat onto it.

Also, a break-in was discovered Friday at the Brown’s Creek Water Co. on 119 Adams Lake Road.

A report said a man attempting to make a bill payment noticed damage to the office and called 911.

Deputy Tim Gaston found a front window had been broken and a screen torn and pushed in. At the time of the report, it could not be determined if anything was missing. Damage was estimated at $50.

A burglary was reported March 17 on 2034 Whitmire Highway. The victim told Deputy Roger Hill that his girlfriend woke him up and said the front door was open. The victim looked through the house to make sure no one was inside and found his LCD/HDTV and Dell computer were gone. These are worth $3,413.

On 381 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, a victim told Sgt. Dee Haney Friday that someone took his .40 caliber Taurus pistol from the glove box of his vehicle. The gun is worth $400
