JONESVILLE — A school used poetry to thank a church for the donations it made in support of the needy children among its student body.

Marlene Sprouse, lay leader for New Hope United Methodist Church, presented the congregation with a card sent to the church by Jonesville Elementary/Middle School during morning worship service on Sunday. She said the card carried a message of thanks from the school to the church for the donations it made toward helping the needy about the school’s student body.

Sprouse said Monday that a number of area churches had been given a list of items for donation to needy children of the school. She said that New Hope had been given a list of children’s sizes in underwear and socks by the school and had collected and donated the items earlier this month. Also, Sprouse said it was her understanding that several pairs of shoes were also purchased and donated by church members for the students.

In the card, which Sprouse read aloud to the congregation, the school asks the church to “Please accept this poem as a token of our gratitude and for being the true teachers of the spirit of Christmas.”

The card also included a poem, also read by Sprouse, thanking the church:

For your kindness words cannot express

All the gratitude we feel at JEMS.

For the books, clothes, dolls and toys

will thrill the hearts of all our girls and boys.

The gifts you give are from the heart

but the true spirit of Christmas is what they impact.

The students will hold these loving memories clear

and will share with others from year to year.
