UNION — The holidays are bit brighter for some needy families thanks to the generosity of the parents, teachers and staff of Foster Park Elementary School.
Since 2010, the school has held its annual Christmas giveaway program, providing needy families with the opportunity to get clothes and toys donated throughout the year by the parents of the school’s students and its teachers and staff.
“We send home a note to parents asking if they have gently used toys or clothes they want to donate,” Principal Barbara Palmer said Monday morning. “When it’s time for spring cleaning, our teachers and staff also bring in the gently used clothes and toys they’ve collected at home. Donations come in all year and we store all of the donated clothes and toys here at the school until its time for the giveaway.”
This year’s giveaway was Friday afternoon and cafeteria tables were covered with piles of clothing while the stage was full of toys. Palmer said the school’s Student Council assisted in this year’s giveaway.
“As a community service project we wanted to get our students involved to give them a lesson about giving back to the community,” Palmer said. “The members of the Student Council helped the people who came to the give way, pushing carts with boxes they could put the clothes they chose in, helping them find the items they wanted, and then pushing the carts with their selections out to the cars when they were done.”
Palmer said approximately 25 families were provided with clothes and toys at Friday’s giveaway.
“It was a really nice day,” Palmer said. “We had at least 25 families and the people were really very appreciative.”
Palmer said the clothes and toys left over from the giveaway were donated to Hebron Baptist Church and UCARE.
