Jamel Dwayne Good, 29, was charged Thursday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with carrying or concealing a weapon. He has been placed on “lockdown” at the jail, meaning he must remain in his cell and has lost privileges such as using the telephone, sending and receiving letters and having visitors.
Good is accused of killing his girlfriend, 31-year-old Maria Fernandez, on Sept. 3. Ms. Fernandez’ skeletal remains were found in a remote area near Carlisle on Jan. 7. Good was arrested on Feb. 9. He was denied bond during a hearing on March 4.
A report said jail officers entered Good’s cell block Wednesday to secure the doors after Good and another inmate took showers. One officer became suspicious after Good walked immediately to his bed area and sat down. The officer walked over to Good and asked him for his shirt. He then asked Good to lift his sleeping mat. The report said Good became very nervous and hesitant. Good lifted the mat and the officer found a white plastic object about two inches long. It was the handle of a spoon that had been sharpened to a very fine and sharp point that could be used for stabbing. The report said this weapon is called a shank in jailhouse terms.
