UNION — The Sims girls played their best basketball of the young season for a half against D.R. Hill on Monday evening, but eventually fell 41-22 to the home team after being outscored 15-0 in the final quarter. The Tigers (1-4) led 7-6 at the end of the first period and gained an 18-14 lead by intermission.

“We played great defense, passed the ball to the post and rebounded very well in the first half,” said Sims Coach Kenny Harris. “Our post players, especially Tay, Aniya, and Asia, played very well in the first two quarters. We just couldn’t finish the game with the same intensity.”

Sims was led offensively by point guard Brooke Smith with 11 points. Asia Tucker chipped in four points and Alexis Beatty contributed three points. Aniya Byrd and Tay Booker rounded out the scoring with two apiece.

The Tigers kept pace with one of the top teams in the conference on Monday before falling to D.R. Hill, 41-27.

D.R. Hill jumped out to an early lead but Sims managed to keep the halftime deficit to only 10. After a back and forth third quarter the Tigers cut the deficit to eight points before D.R. Hill made it’s final run.

“We made a lot of mistakes tonight,” said Sims Coach Cam Willis. “We could have given up after we were down 16 at one point in the third quarter but the kids fought back and gave us a chance in the fourth. We still have to cut out the careless mistakes and take care of the basketball. We will get better, and that’s on me as the coach.”

Both Sims teams host Florence Chapel on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.
