DSN at Bethlehem UMC

Each year we are so blessed to have the folks from the DSN Homes join us at Bethlehem UMC for an evening of fun and fellowship as we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ. The folks from DSN blessed us with a musical drama then we shared a meal together and had a special visit from Santa. Pictured with Santa is Griffen from one of the DSN Homes here in Union. Santa’s helpers were Gabby Manus and Joshua Ribelin, and (not pictured) Dylan Weaver.

One day Sis was telling her neighbor, Jimmy Yount, “I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me four thousand dollars, but its state of the art. It’s perfect and I love it.”

“Really,” answered Jimmy. “What kind is it?”

“It is 12:30, you want to get some lunch.”

A Christmas Reminder

This morning I heard a story on the radio of a woman who was out Christmas shopping with her two children; after many hours of looking at row after row of toys and everything else, and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw under the sun, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids. She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the year — overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every housewarming, taste all the holiday food and treats, get that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, make sure we don’t forget anyone on our card list, and the pressure of making sure we respond to everyone who sent us a card.

Finally the elevator doors opened and there was already a crowd in the car. She pushed her way into the car and dragged her two kids in with her and all the bags of stuff. When the doors closed she couldn’t take it anymore and stated, “Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up and shot.”

From the back of the car everyone heard a quiet, calm voice respond, “Don’t worry. We already crucified him.”

For the rest of the trip down the elevator it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.

Don’t forget this year to keep the One who started this whole Christmas thing in your every thought, deed, purchase, and word.

If we all did it, just think of how different this whole world would be.

Local Prayer Concerns

Louise Kirby, Bruce Inman, Carol Whitener, Erin Gallman, Bud Sanders, Marcella Smith, Pam Price, Leroy Belue, Paul Collins, Jane Adkins, Dean Brown, the family of Mr. Donald Lee Beard, the family of Mrs. Frances Candler, I.G. Vanderford, Bill McLeod and Cecil Yount.

What Is It?

Some folks have been asking as they see construction at the site on the Duncan Bypass near the Wal-Mart store. What are we getting? I voted for a Waffle House but they say it is a shoe store.

You are invited to Bethlehem (9:30 a.m.) and Foster’s Chapel UMC (11 a.m.) for a beautiful joint-choir Christmas Cantata Sunday, Dec. 16, “Come, Let Us Worship the King.”

Mrs. Donna Manus, we appreciate you so much, Merry Christmas to you and your family. Donna is the choir leader at both churches.

5th Sunday Community Service

Mark your calendars for the 5th Sunday Community Service to be held at Bethlehem UMC on December 30 at 6 p.m. Rev. Alma Brown, Chaplain with Agape Hospice, will be our guest speaker and musician. Join us for a message, good music, good food and fellowship.

The Hillbilly 10 Commandments

Here is a Hillbilly view on life’s mandates.

1. Just one God

2. Put nothin’ before God

3. Watch yer mouth

4. Git yourself to Sunday meetin’

5. Honor yer Ma & Pa

6. No killin’

7. No foolin’ around with another fellow’s gal

8. Don’t take what ain’t yers

9. No tellin’ tales or gossipin’

10. Don’t be hankerin’ for yer buddy’s stuff

Seems very reasonable says Mike Manus.

Jacob’s Well

Open House was held for Jacob’s Well Mission Center (old Hope Hospital at Lockhart) on Saturday. This is an amazing local mission that will minister to Union County as well as other counties in need. You will see more about this great mission later, keep your ears open and should you need more information you can contact Mitch Sinclair at 864-426-5914 or Spencer Ledford at 864-907-4857. Let us take care of our neighbors and friends!

The Right Kind Of Change

Everything happens for a reason, live it, love it, learn from it! Make your smile change the world, but don’t let the world change your smile.

The “U” In Jesus

Before U were thought of or time had begun,

God even stuck U in the name of His Son.

And each time U pray, you’ll see it’s true

You can’t spell out JesUs and not include U.

You’re a pretty big part of His wonderful name,

For U, He was born; that’s why He came.

And His great love for U is the reason He died.

It even takes U to spell crUcified.

Isn’t it thrilling and splendidly grand

He rose from the dead, with U in His plan.

The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew,

and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U.

When JesUs left earth at His upward ascension,

He felt there was one thing He just had to mention.

Go into the world and tell them it’s true That I love them all —

Just like I love U.

So many great people are spelled with a U,

Don’t they have a right to know JesUs too?

It all depends now on what U will do,

He’d like them to know

But it all starts with U. –
