UNION – This marks the final week of the Union Daily Times Pigskin Pick ‘Ems and in honor of this final week, we would like to give a big round of thanks to the members of our inaugural prognosticators panel: Kevin Shropshire, Steven Addis, Doc Lipsey, Sam Phipps and our sports editor, Tiffany Grady-Hudgins.

Of course, we also want to thank the guest pickers we have hosted each week. Without each one of you, we could not have made this a success. We are looking forward to coming back next year.

Since Tiffany has been busy doing some jam-up coverage of the Union County High School Yellow Jackets’ road to the state championship, I thought I would give her a reprieve and take care of Pigskin Pick ‘Ems. You can thank me later, Tiff. After all, I’m the one who started throwing story ideas at you on Saturday night.

By the way, speaking of our coverage, I would like to take this opportunity to pat ourselves on the back a little. Sorry, guys. We will get to your records with the picking in a bit. First, a little bit of business.

The Union Daily Times was, from what I understand, the only local print media – read inside Union County – to send a staff member to the press conference in Columbia on Monday.

It was at 10 in the morning which meant that Tiffany had to get up and drive there, spend a few hours there getting quotes and passes and all that cool stuff before heading back here to work on the Tuesday paper. Oh, and update our Facebook page while she was there, too.

When you work for a daily newspaper, multitasking is your middle name and it pretty much defines who you are. But hey, we knew our community would want there to be coverage between our pages on it, so we did what we knew we had to do.

The phrase “Whew!” is a given exclamation during football season, especially when you have to go cover a football game that might run late then get the story written for the Saturday paper. No, we don’t have the luxury of time when it comes to coverage.

But back to this week’s picks.

The year has been an up and down ride for most of you: you’ve soared to the top only to be knocked to the gutter by a week of bad picks. Just ask Sam: “I’m superstitious. That’s why I pick the way I do. I’ve also gone from the big house to the outhouse in standings.”

Well put, Sam. Well put. We think that about sums it up for most of you pickers: what was in the big house is now in the outhouse and what was in the outhouse has moved on up the hill. Into greener pastures. On to bigger and better digs.

And until next season, may all of our football throws be spirals.
