UNION — An event sponsored by the Union County Development Board to show its appreciation of and support for the industries of Union County brought together representatives of 18 companies for a day of fun and networking opportunities.

Andrena Powell-Baker, Union County Development Board executive director, said the board held its annual Industry Appreciation Golf Tournament earlier this month at Musgrove Mill Golf and Country Club.

In a letter to the plant managers and human resource managers of local industries inviting those companies to participate in the event, Powell-Baker said that its goal is to demonstrate the board’s appreciation for those industries and those who work to promote industrial development in Union County.

“This is an important event that demonstrates our appreciation to local industry for their continued commitment to our community,” Powell-Baker said. “We also use this event to extend appreciation to the allies and economic development professionals who have been strong supporters of our community and economic development efforts.

“At the Union County Development Board, one of our most important objectives is to provide meaningful support to existing industry within our county,” she said. “Clearly, your presence in our county is more important now than ever in that you have proven your sustainability in these challenging economic times.”

Powell-Baker described the tournament as “a great opportunity for you to network with other professionals, meet our sponsors and economic development allies, or simply enjoy a day of fun and relaxation with peers.”

The companies that participated in the tournament were Carlisle Finishing — ITG, City of Union, Dollar General Distribution Center, Lockhart Power Company, Republic Services, Milliken and Company, The Timken Company, Gestamp South Carolina, United Wood Treating, Arthur State Bank, Broad River Electric Cooperative, Lamar Construction Company, McNair Law Firm, Pacolet Milliken Enterprises, Showcase Marketing, Alliance Consulting Engineers. Duke Energy, Grow SC II, Parker Poe Attorneys and Counselors at Law, Rogers & Callcott, South Carolina Power Team and Carlisle Associates.

Some of the participating companies organized teams that played in the tournament. Powell-Baker said that Broad River Electric Cooperative’s team won the tournament.

In addition to participating in the tournament, many of the companies also served as sponsors. The sponsorship categories are Platinum for companies that contribute $1,000, Gold for those that contribute $600, and Hole for those who contribute less than $600. Platinum sponsors were Arthur State Bank, Broad River Electric Cooperative, Lamar Construction Company, McNair Law Firm, Pacolet Milliken Enterprises and Showcase Marketing. Gold sponsors were Alliance Consulting Engineers, Duke Energy, Grow SC II, Parker Poe Attorneys and Counselors at Law, Rogers & Callcott and South Carolina Power Team. The Hole sponsor was Carlisle Associates.

In a statement released Tuesday, Powell-Baker again thanked local industries for their loyalty to Union County and the role they play in job creation.

“This is an important event that demonstrates our appreciation to local industry for their continued commitment to our community,” Powell-Baker said. “We value and appreciate our existing companies for being here and for staying the course with us through challenging economic times. We never want to lose sight of how important they are to helping us create jobs and capital investment. Eighty to 90 percent of jobs created in the state of South Carolina are through existing industry.

Powell-Baker pointed out that the board’s industry appreciation activities are inspired by the state’s Industry Appreciation Week.

“The Union County Development Board Golf Tournament is a spin-off event of the South Carolina Department of Commerce’s Annual Industry Appreciation Week which is typically held in the spring,” Powell-Baker said. “This kick off week gives communities all over the state a starting point to celebrate, say ‘thank you’ and recognize local industry for their contributions. We also use this event to extend appreciation to the allies and economic development professionals who have been strong supporters of our community and our economic development efforts.”

Powell-Baker added that the event is funded exclusively with funds provided by sponsor donations.

“No public dollars are spent on this event,” Powell-Baker said. “It is funded 100 percent with private sponsor donations and it is free to our local industry.

“This year’s tournament was one of the best yet with a record turnout from industry and sponsors,” she said. “Sixty eight golfers signed up to play and everyone who attended had a great time. On behalf of the Union County Development Board, I want to thank our valued sponsors for their continued participation. We could not host this one of a kind industry event without their generous financial support.”
