SPARTANBURG — The Spartanburg Community College Foundation awarded $28,256 in academic scholarships to 42 deserving SCC students for the 2012-2013 school year. Donors and students were recently honored at the Foundation’s annual scholarship awards brunch at the Marriott at Renaissance Park in Spartanburg.
“We are fortunate enough to be entrusted with funds from our generous donors that make these scholarships possible,” SCC Foundation Chairman Steve Querin said as he opened the ceremony. “Frankly, it’s the coolest part of what we do, and we’re proud to do it. On behalf of the SCC Foundation board, we congratulate all of the scholarship recipients and we thank the donors for their continued support.”
Robert David Burdette, a Mechatronics student at SCC, will be the first person in his family to receive a college degree. “This is an awesome opportunity. The faculty and staff at SCC have taken me in like family. It’s a dream come true to achieve an associate’s degree. It’s allowed me to be an inspiration to my son and my daughter. I’m honored to receive this scholarship from Grainger, which has made a big difference for me.”
Desizinore Browning, a nontraditional, work-study, university transfer student who is also a student ambassador at SCC, received two scholarships at the award ceremony. “First and foremost, I must say thank you to the donors, because these scholarships truly do help. I was laid off from my job and decided to go back to school. Now I have three part-time jobs and a senior in high school, so I have to work and maintain good grades. I love SCC because it has given me the foundation of education, which is so important to make it in this world today. It’s been challenging, but I would not change anything about this opportunity.”
“Our benevolent donors are community members, non-profits and local businesses,” said Sam S. Hook, executive director of the SCC Foundation. “We commemorate theirgenerosity and the impact they make on our students’ lives who will, in return, make a difference in our community. It’s outstanding to see how even a modest contribution can make a long lasting impression.”
