Soaring from the baseline of the Charlotte Bobcats Practice Facility, Devontae “Fox” Glenn slammed a dunk to catapult his team to a come from behind win. He loves this game and it shows.
“Being able to continue playing basketball a gift,” Glenn said. “It’s more than just a sport to me. When I have a basketball in my hands I feel like I’m 100 feet tall and nobody can stop me.”
Glenn, a former basketball standout at Union County High School, is thriving at the South Carolina Sports Academy in Garden City.
Following his senior year, Glenn elected to attend the post-graduate prep school to improve recruiting visibility while sharpening his skills.
“It was kind of hard at first adjusting to a new coach and a different style of play,” he said. “But I was just glad I had the opportunity to come to SCSA.”
Enrolling in the academy gives Glenn an extra year of college eligibility and when he leaves SCSA in the spring he’ll look to continue his career at either Benedict College or Coastal Carolina.
“This gives me another year to prove myself,” said Glenn. “It also gives me better scholarship chances and more time to develop.”
At 6’4 Glenn was the tallest of the Union County starters last year and was used primarily as a forward.
His agility and ball handling capabilities make him one of the most versatile athletes on the floor and this year Glenn is serving as a guard for the SCSA Storm.
“I play the 1 (Point Guard), 2 (Shooting Guard) and 3 (Combo Guard),” Glenn explained. “That means I have to be more of the tempo keeper. I’ve got to know when to slow the game down and when to speed it up.”
Last weekend his team competed against other post-graduate prep schools at the Bobcats practice facility in Charlotte where Glenn had a chance to flex his talents before a slew of coaches.
On Friday he lit up the court for 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in the opening match versus Thomasville Prep and his baseline power dunk started a rally that resulted in a 92-87 come from behind win.
In game two, Believe Academy squeaked out a 80-77 win over the Storm despite the efforts of Glenn who turned in 12 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and blocked two shots.
He tallied 19 rebounds in the weekend finale and chipped in 10 points to help the Storm to a 99-90 win over a North Carolina-based team before heading back to his home in Garden City.
“We’re starting to come together as a team,” said Glenn. “We’re getting a good feel for the game and for each other. Our motto is that ‘teamwork leads to dream work’ and around here we’ve got some pretty big dreams.”
