A 62-year-old Union man died Friday morning in a wreck on S.C. 49 in Laurens County.

Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson with the S.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck that claimed the life of Johnnie W. Gage of 4044 Cross Keys Highway occurred around 1:35 a.m., about 5.5 miles north of Laurens near Interstates 26 and 385. Gage reportedly was on his way to work in Mauldin.

Robinson said Gage was the driver of a 1998 Jeep Cherokee that was struck by a 2000 Peterbilt tractor trailer driven by Remus Taylor, 45, of 3111 Mazie Drive, Zephyrhills, Fla.

Both men were wearing safety belts. Taylor was not injured, Robinson said.

Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols said the tractor trailer was attempting to turn around when the collision occurred and the trailer was over the center line.

Robinson said the collision, which occurred at a private driveway, is under investigation by the Highway Patrol’s Multi-Jurisdictional Accident Investigation Team.
