COLUMBIA — Union County Head Coach Steve Taneyhill found himself in a familiar place on Friday night when his Yellow Jackets secured a third round playoff win by defeating A.C. Flora 41-38.
Not only was he within a stone’s throw from Williams Brice — his old stomping grounds — but by the end of the night, Taneyhill had brought his team one step closer to a championship, something else he’s accustomed to.
He should also be comfortable on Friday night when Union County squares off with Daniel for the Upper State title a few miles down the road from Clemson University where he made himself at home during his days as signal caller for South Carolina.
As fate would have it, the Gamecocks will be in town for the annual Clemson/Carolina showdown next weekend.
“We’re gonna be the big game before the little game on Saturday,” Taneyhill declared.
Quarterback Keiston Smith sparked the Union County offense on Friday night, placing his team in championship contention.
He connected with Victor Ruth on a 75-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and although the Falcons threatened on several occasions, Union County never relinquished the lead.
“The way we’ve played these last three games is a completely different team than our first 10,” said Taneyhill. “I don’t know who I was coaching three weeks ago but it wasn’t this bunch.”
A complete game summary will be in Tuesday’s edition of The Union Daily Times.
