Do Something Special

Dear Readers, would you like to do something very special that you probably have not done before? And by doing it, you would bless the lives of many special people.

Each Christmas, some people that I know surprise the sick and injured Marine recruits at the San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot by giving them patriotic Christmas stockings full of phone cards, envelopes, stamps, note pads, and pens. But the important gift in this stocking is a bundle of letters that are collected from children all over the country. Last year there were 100 recruits and each recruit had 15 letters in their stocking. That’s over 1,500 letters!

Would you please help by collecting letters and/or drawings from children of all ages? They also need letters from adults of all ages. The subject can be patriotic, holiday wishes, or even a simple thank you for serving our county. It can be from schools (public or private), Sunday schools, clubs, retirement homes, and just your own family.

Following are simple guidelines for the letters: Notes, letter, pictures and cards accepted. Salutation should be “Dear Recruit.” If a school class is doing this, please send all the letters/drawings in one package to the address below. NO personal return addresses. Mark the back of each note with a classroom sticker or stamp with the school address, if they desire possible responses from recruits. Please do not use glitter.

I really hope that this idea passes like wildfire through our county. Let’s really make these sick and injured soldiers know how much we appreciate their sacrifices. I hope that my readers who are teachers and parents would take this idea to their respective schools, Sunday School classes, and churches and let’s really bless these dedicated men and women.

It Began With An iPhone

My friend, Bubba Jim, told me recently about gift-giving and how much it costs.

He said, “IT all began with an iPhone…March was when our son celebrated his 17th birthday, and we got him an iPhone. He just loved it. Who wouldn’t? I celebrated my birthday in July, and my wife made me very happy when she bought me an iPad. Our daughter’s birthday was in August so we got her an iPod Touch. My wife celebrated her birthday in September so I got her an iRon (Editor’s Note: Her iRon was just like a computer. It had a left click, a right click, and the ironing board was a ‘mouse’). It was around then that the fight started.. What my wife failed to recognize is that the iRon can be integrated into the home network with the iWash, iCook and iClean. This inevitably activates the iNag reminder service. I should be out of the hospital next week!! iHurt!!”

A School Assignment

When my granddaughter, Ann, was 9 years old, she was given an assignment by her teacher to write a story on “Where my family came from.” The purpose was to understand your genealogy.

I was not aware of her assignment when she asked me at the dining room table one night, “Grandma, where did I come from?”

I responded quite nervously because my son and daughter-in-law were out of town and I was stalling until they returned home, “Well, honey, the stork brought you.”

“Where did Mom come from then?” “The stork brought her, too.” “OK, then where did you come from?” “The stork brought me too, dear.” “Okay, thanks, Grandma.”

I did not think anything more about it until two days later when I was cleaning Ann’s room and read the first sentence of her paper, “For three generations there have been no natural births in our family.”

25 Years Of Marriage

Have you ever felt that you and your wife have reached a plateau in your relationship with each other. Consider the following story: Bubba Jim and his wife go to a counselor after 25 years of marriage.

The counselor asks them what the problem is and the wife goes into a tirade listing every problem they have ever had in the 25 years they’ve been married. She goes on and on and on.

Finally, the counselor gets up, walks around the desk, embraces the wife and kisses her passionately.

The woman shuts up and sits quietly in a daze. The counselor turns to the husband and says, “This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?”

The husband thinks for a moment and replies, “Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish.

Da Wise Judge!

Several women, each trying to one-up the other, appeared in court, each accusing the others of causing the trouble they were having in the apartment building where they lived.

The judge, with Solomon-like wisdom decreed, “Okay, I’m ready to hear the evidence…I’ll hear the oldest first.”

The case was dismissed for lack of testimony.

Welcome To The World

April and Larry Goins are the new parents of Jase Henry Jackson Goins, an eight-pound, one-ounce boy born on Nov. 7. April is the daughter of Rev. Johnny and Connie Burgess of Buffalo. Congratulations, y’all.

Happy Birthday

to Lois Sanders, wife of Lee Sanders, who is celebrating her birthday on Sunday, Nov. 18. Happy Birthday and may our Lord bless you richly. I hear surprises are coming your way!

Prayer Concerns

Special prayer is asked for my fellow columnist, Hoyt Haney, who is having medical issues.

Let’s continue to pray for the following special people who are experiencing different challenges: Kristen Moorman is still having difficulties recuperating from surgery; Alyssa Morris is just about ready to have her baby girl; Hunter Taylor, grandson of Melinda Haney, is scheduled for more tests; Gene Gregory, owner of Gene’s Fine Foods, having rehabilitation with a situation with his left foot; Connie Burgess, wife of Rev. Johnny Burgess of New Hope Baptist Church, discovered cancer and is presently in treatments; Doug Howell, father of Tammy Gault, was admitted to the hospital with breathing problems.

Ms. Ruth Quinn is asking that we pray for her sister-in-law, Pear Lee Holt, who is having a serious medical situation. Marvin McCullough, Sarah Heatherly, Ronnie Fisher, Bouncer Bright and for the many, many people who are victims of hurricane Sandy.

Let’s pray for the many small businesses in our county that more business would come their way and that new jobs will open up for our unemployed citizens.
