Authorities say gang activity has led to the arrest of a man accused of trying to harm a potential witness in a case.

James Burton “Jimmy” Medford, 25, of 2363 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, was charged Thursday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with attempted intimidation of a witness.

According to his arrest warrant, Medford coerced a fellow gang affiliate to call a woman and lure the woman to a certain location with the intent to do great bodily harm to her. The woman is a witness for the state against a known gang affiliate of Medford, the warrant said.

Capt. James McNeil declined to mention specifically the case the woman is involved in to help protect her safety.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” McNeil said.

Medford was taken into custody at his home Thursday evening. As officers converged on the home, someone inside called 911 and reported a break-in was in progress and the suspects were armed with guns.

Medford is being held in the Union County Jail. No bond had been set for him Friday.

Medford’s arrest is the third alleged gang-related arrest in Union County in less than a week.

On March 6, Wesley Dale Waldrop, 18, of 114 Union Boulevard was charged with receiving stolen goods. A 15-year-old boy was arrested in the same case and charged with grand larceny. According to a report, Waldrop coerced the boy into taking guns from a home in Pauline for a “big boy job.”

Sunday, Union Public Safety officers discovered several areas spray painted with gang-related graffiti.

Friday, extra law enforcement officers were called to patrol at Union County High School after a rumor was started that gang-related violence was going to occur.
