JONESVILLE — The SLED (State Law Enforcement Division) Arson Team and the Union County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fire that destroyed a mobile home Wednesday afternoon.
The Jonesville, Bonham, Kelly-Kelton and Buffalo fire departments were dispatched to the blaze at 1732 West Springs Highway, but Jonesville Fire Chief Jimmy Wilkins said Thursday that before they arrived on the scene, firefighters were informed the building could not be saved.
“We got the call at 2:46,” Wilkins said. “A deputy was already on the scene and he informed us it was already fully engulfed. It was gone by the time we got there, it was a total loss. Somebody told us it was a 1970s model trailer and it doesn’t take long for those to go up.”
Wilkins said no one was home when the fire started and that a neighbor had called 911. He said no one was injured in the blaze.
Wilkins said firefighters remained on the scene until 8:30 p.m., first putting out the blaze and making sure it stayed out, and then assisting the SLED Arson Team as they began their investigation.
“When we got on the scene, we learned the power had been turned off Monday,” Wilkins said. “Sheriff Taylor was there and they called in the SLED Arson Team to investigate the fire. By the time they got there it was getting dark so we put a light tower up on the truck so they could do their work.”
Taylor declined to comment about the investigation, saying only that the fire was “suspicious in nature” and that the county arson investigator, Scott Coffer, was working with the SLED Arson Team.
