UNION — The Union Daily Times’ gang of gridiron gurus is back in effect with a little swagger after a satisfactory week of forecasting football.

Kevin Shropshire swears that the first four weeks he spent in last place was a ploy to be underestimated by his fellow visionaries.

Pace yourself, Shrop. We’ve still got over a month of football to predict.

“He’ll choke in the playoffs,” Sam Phipps declared. “Kind of like Dan Marino.”

(Moment of silence for the greatest quarterback never to win a Super Bowl.)

Back to Sam. He relinquished sole custody of the lead after picking nine of 16 games correctly. Sam has a tough time with Friday night football. His numbers come on Saturday with the college picks.

(Note to self: Put more high school games on next week’s list.)

Steven Addis and Kevin slipped into a three-way tie with Sam for first place after picking 11 games correctly.

Doc and I would advise them not to get too comfortable. We’re only one game behind.

Speaking of discomfort, is anyone else on the panel just a little perturbed that our guest picker showed us up with a 13-3 record?

The fact that he’s my little brother adds insult to injury.

Speaking of insults and injuries, will somebody check on the Gamecocks? I’m not sure they made it out of the swamp on Saturday.

Steven Addis explained that Clemson’s “cupcake conference” is the reason they haven’t seen a similar fate this year and encourages me to remember the Orange Bowl fiasco.

As if we could forget.

One Carolina team we won’t be discussing this week is the Panthers. Quite frankly, the panel is tired of Cam Newton and company throwing us off every week.

Union County High School Athletic Director Will Hickson joins us to do a little picking and I expressed my condolences for bringing him in on the week we got our swag back.

He informed me that he’s won against our panel every week and feels pretty good about his odds.

Check back next week to see if Mr. Hickson topples our presumptuous pack of pickers.
