UNION — Three educators and published authors will tell ghost stories and other spooky tales during Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site’s annual Halloween-themed “Tales of Union County” on Saturday.
In announcing the event, Park Interpreter Elizabeth Moses urged the public to “join us Saturday, Oct. 27 for a fun journey into the spooky past as Rose Hill Plantation presents an evening for visitors to enjoy local legends and ghostly tales presented by regional storytellers.”
Those regional storytellers are Dr. Alan Charles, professor of history at USC Union; Randall Ivey, professor of English at USC Union; and Dr. Martha Benn Macdonald, instructor of English and Language at York Technical College.
Moss said that while the stories are being told, participants will also be able to enjoy refreshments served by the site’s staff and have the opportunity to make some of their own.
“The eeriness begins at 6:30 p.m. behind the kitchen at the rear of the Gist Mansion,” Moses said. “While listening to southern folklore, stories and legends, the whole family can enjoy a marshmallow roast by the campfire, hot apple cider, hot chocolate and other refreshments. Visitors make s’mores as the park will provide chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers will be provided.”
Moses said attendees should bring a lawn chair, blanket or some other type of portable seating and to dress accordingly for the weather to ensure their comfort. She said that because lighting will be limited and the ground is slightly uneven, it is recommended that attendees wear decent walking shoes.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will be canceled.
Moses said that space is not limited, but persons interested in attending are asked to pre-register by Thursday to ensure an accurate count of visitors so the park will have sufficient refreshments on hand.
Admission is $7.50 for visitors age 6 and older and free for children 5 and under.
Moses said that visitors with the Park Passport Plus are admitted for free.

Normal Hours Of Operation
Park grounds are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. year round. The mansion home is only accessible by guided tour. Tours are held at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. from March through October and 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. from November through February. The grounds at Rose Hill Plantation may be rented for weddings and other events.
