Remember last week when I said to check back once the results were in to see who of The Union Daily Times Pigskin Pick ’Em panel was cryin’ and who was shinin’? Well, the scores have been tallied and let’s just say that none of us are beaming with pride. In fact, we’re all a little embarrassed.
“I don’t think I got but four games right,” said a stunned Doc Lipsey.
Close, Doc…You hit on six.
Our top picker this week was Kevin Shropshire who picked eight of 15 games correctly.
“At least it moved me out of last place,” Kevin laughed. “You can have that spot, Tiff. You deserve it.”
And I’ve received a sufficient amount of ridicule for my inferior exhibition. During Sunday dinner I was roasted better than the chicken.
“Do I need to school you in picking football games now?” my brother Shane wanted to know.
I smell a challenge — Let’s see what you’ve got.
“So, who’d he pick in the South Carolina/Florida game?” asked Sam Phipps from the top of the leaderboad.
Florida, 63-17.
“You do know we don’t have to pick scores, don’t you Shane,” Steven Addis offered.
He’s been informed of the rules but felt obliged to share his foresight anyway, along with a prediction for the Clemson/Virginia Tech game.
“Clemson, 63-17,” said Shane with a grin.
One would surmise that, like his sister, Shane’s blood also runneth orange and one would be correct.
I digress — Let’s get back to the panel.
Yes, I’ve replaced Kevin at the back of the pack, three points behind Sam who is getting comfortable in first place. (I think I heard him refer to himself as the “Top Dog”.) Meanwhile, Kevin joins Doc and Steven in a three-way tie for second.
Here’s hoping that this week’s picks shake things up a bit.
In high school action, Union County will host Chapman in it’s Homecoming game. Five of us went with the Yellow Jackets while one brave soul (ahem, Sam) dared to pick Chapman.
Northwestern at York will be a marquee match-up and the jury is split right down the middle on this one.
There are several interesting college games on tap including LSU at Texas A&M. Shane and I are concerned that the newest edition to the SEC is being underestimated by our fellow prognosticators. We’re taking the Aggies.
South Carolina will see Florida in the Swamp this week and, once again, my brother and I stray from the pack here. We feel that the Gamecocks are being overestimated by our fellow prognosticators.
So, in summation, the entire panel missed the bus last week but we’re over it. It’s time to get back to business.
So, in the immortal words of Marvin Gaye and Mills Lane, “Let’s get it on.”
