I bet you think I’m going to start this with talking about the Christmas Parade as usual.

No I’ll wait a little bit. Instead I want to tell you about “Four Worms In Church” and a lesson to be learned.

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. Four worms were placed in four separate jars.

The first worm was placed into a container of alcohol.

The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.

The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.

The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.

At the conclusion of the sermon the minister reported the following results: the first worm in alcohol — dead. The second worm in cigarette smoke — dead. The third worm in chocolate syrup — dead. The fourth worm in good clean soil — alive.

So the minister ask the congregation what did you learn from this demonstration?

Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said, “As long as you drink, smoke, and eat chocolate you won’t have worms.”

That pretty much ended the service.

Weather

You know I was surprised that the temperature in Kosovo was the same as here in South Carolina. I really thought it was more like Michigan. Russ says it’s about 50 in the morning and in the 70s in the afternoons.

Well Russ, that’s what we’ve been having. I think it was 48 when I got up this morning and then it got 74, and let me look and see what it is now — 50 at 2 a.m. in the morning.

When I was in my late teens, a friend of mine was stationed in Germany, and he’d send pictures of the different seasons, mainly winter, and it was the same as ours. But Kosovo, must not be in the same latitude.

Anyway, I hope the salmon stew turned out and it warmed everyone up, next you’ll have to find a chicken, for stew, unless they are pets, Russ.

Explanation

Everyone has been asking why I advertised for my competition in my last news letter.

Why not? I started out as a new beautician when I moved to South Carolina, it was a rough time getting started. The only thing I had going for me was word of mouth. If you do a good job on someone they’ll tell a friend, and so on.

I had a very good established business in Michigan when my husband decided to pack us up and move here. So I started all over, and on my own without a husband to help with any bills.

I have a conscience and have always tried to treat people as I would hope they’d treat me, I have to live with my actions and not have guilty feelings. If my customers stray, then I have to tell myself that I’m not doing my best for them.

Helping Others

One day, Lockhart became flooded from heavy rains and blocked sewage drains. A lot of houses in the Flat area of town became flooded, including my business. The inside was all mud when the water all drained out.

I had a lot of work to do to restore it to working order, so I call on another beautician to see if I could rent a booth from her, to bring my customers to. She had plenty of room, but told me “no.” She said that she didn’t want me taking her customers from her. I told her that I had my own, I just needed a place to do them.

Well a friend of hers told her that was not the Christian way. So she asked him to build a wall between the chairs so I could not see her.

In the meantime, another beautician told me she had been praying to God to find an answer. She had cancer and needed help and took me in.

Of course, one Saturday she called me from Columbia and said she got married and sold her business on Swap and Shop and I had to clear out because they were coming with a truck and taking everything the next day. There I was, not quite ready to open yet.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is, it never hurts to try to help someone, even if there’s nothing in it for you.

Christmas Parade

Build, build, build those floats for the Christmas Parade in Lockhart on Sunday, Dec. 2.

Voting is at 1:30 at the Lockhart School. They will be for Original, Attractive and Theme. A plaque will be awarded for each one.

Vendors are welcome free of charge.

Frightening Movie

I will never go to a flea market, yard sale, goodwill, or salvation army. Well, I’ll go but I’m not buying anything weird.

My daughter took me to a movie last week, “Possession.” I thought we were going to see Nemo or something light. Well, let me ruin this movie for you.

A young girl bought a beautiful carved box from a yard sale. Evil was inside the box, and she pried it open. It took over her body.

Now they said this was based from a true story. No way.

I tried to take a nap. I figured that since it was so dark in the theater I could get by with it, and my daughter would think I was watching this movie. My eyes stayed closed most of the time, I didn’t sleep because I thought if I really fell into it hard I might snore and that would scare everyone.

She talked about it most of the way home, she sure was glad she got to see it before it went off.

I’m just glad it was free.

My body did jump once in awhile when my eyes were opened. I’ll have to tell you about me and scary movies sometimes.

Reunion

Dickie Shugart wants me to remind you of the Lockhart School Reunion on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Family Life Center located behind the Hot Spot on # 9. The center is on Armory Road.

He said you can bring finger food or covered dish, and a 2-liter drink. He said anyone that attended Lockhart School was invited to come and visit with fellow classmates.
