UNION — The Union County JV team picked up its third straight win on Thursday night with a 29-14 victory over Clinton.
The Jackets jumped out to a quick 20-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Dierrius Smith ran in the first touchdown with 4:45 on the clock and Venshay Beatty recovered a fumble on the ensuing drive, returning it to the Clinton goal line where Roscoe Johnson took it the rest of the way for six more.
Smith found the end zone again on the two-point-conversion for the 14-0 lead.
The Union County defense forced a Clinton three-and-out to bring the offense back onto the field.
With 1:20 left in the frame, Michael Guin took a hand off from quarterback Matthew Barnett and picked up 40 yards and capped off the drive with a touchdown run. The point-after-kick was blocked for a 20-0 score.
Once again the Jackets forced the Red Devils to punt after just three plays and a 20-yard hook-up between Barnett and Montray Feaster put Union County in the red zone.
The Clinton defense forced a field goal attempt and Eric Guinn booted a 14-yarder to extend the lead to 23-0.
A pick-six put Clinton on the board but the point-after-kick was unsuccessful and Union County carried a 23-6 lead into intermission.
The Red Devils put up seven more in the third quarter but it was too little, too late and Barnett found Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown for the 29-14 final.
