UNION — The Sims seventh-grade football team slipped past McCracken on Wednesday, 24-22. The Tigers’ defense, led by Princeton Hunter, TJ Cocker, Matthew Floyd and Storm Edwards, kept the Eagles from crossing the 50-yard line for all but one possession. That single possession resulted in a McCracken touchdown and the other two came by way of Sims turnovers.
“Two key turnovers allowed them to stay in a game,” explained Sims Head Coach Mitchell Moss. “We handled adversity pretty well, though, and the defense played lights out.”
Sims quarterback Brian Good connected with receivers Terrence Briggs and John Addison to set up a Ladarious Jeter touchdown run and two-point conversion that knotted things up at 8-8 late in the second quarter.
The Tigers scored again early in the second half with a 70-yard kickoff return courtesy of Jaden Bates to take the lead. Jeter scored the final touchdown and Good followed up with a successful two-point conversion.
“This was a good win for us. Princeton Hunter dominated both sides of the ball on Wednesday. I think the coaching staff has done a great job of teaching and coaching these players. They are fun to watch.”
The seventh-grade Tigers are 4-0 and travel to Carver next Wednesday.
The eighth-grade Tigers defeated the McCracken Eagles 30-8 on Thursday night. Sims received the opening kickoff and drove down the field to score in just five plays.
Shi Smith connected with Brett Carter on a 40-yard pass on the first play of the game to set up a three-yard touchdown run courtesy of LaBrayon Woods. The two-point conversion pass from Smith to Carter was successful and Sims took an 8-0 lead. McCracken drove down to the goal line but the Sims defense held firm and Smith ran a quarterback keep 99 yards for a touchdown. He later scored on a 40-yard run while Ty Washington scored a 4-yard touchdown run. Carter and Darren Osborne rounded out the scoring with successful two-point conversions.
“For the first time all the year the eighth-graders played a complete game,” said Moss. “The defense and offensive line — AJ Hunter, Hunter Ivey, Josh Griffin, Aaron Edwards, Devin Jeter, Chris Johnson — all played well. We have three weeks to go and all of our goals are still reachable. The community should really come out and watch both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams play. They are very exciting to watch.”
The eighth-grade Tigers improve to 3-1 and will host Carver next week. Last week Shi Smith was named Leonard’s of Buffalo’s Player of the Week, throwing two touchdown passes and running for two.
This week, Bret Carter caught four passes for a total of 90 yards and scored a pair of two point conversions to be named Leonard’s player of the week.
Both players received a free meal from Leonard’s of Buffalo.
