UNION — The biennial dredging of the creek that supplies Foster Park Lake with water and the replacement of sidewalks along several city streets and the resurfacing of the roadways of several others were among the more than $150,000 worth of projects approved by Union City Council during its September meeting.
Council awarded the bid for the dredging of the creek to Smith Backhoe and Construction of Union for $1,900.
Perry Harmon, Public Services Director, said the creek is dredged every two years to remove the accumulated sand.
“The creek supplies water to the pond and also provides an area to filter out sand before it can go into the pond,” Harmon said. “We dredge it every two years to remove the sand. The dredging will take it down about three to four feet. They’ll take about 20 dump truck loads of sand out of there.”
Harmon said the sand dredged from the creek will be taken to the city’s Kenwood Brush Pit on Walnut Street where it will be used to cover the brush collected in the pit.
In a related matter, council awarded the bid for bulldozer work at the Kenwood and Eison Road brush pits to Smith Backhoe and Construction for $7,120.
Harmon said the company will help the brush pits remain in compliance with DHEC regulations.
“Once brush is accumulated it must be pushed over into the gully,” Harmon said. “DHEC then requires that it be covered by dirt. They (Smith) will do this four to five times over the next year.”
The city is in the process of closing down the Kenwood facility which Harmon said requires the brush pit be covered with a final layer of dirt.
Council voted unanimously to award the bid for supplying that dirt to Ray Lemons Bulldozing of Jonesville for $4,875.
“We’re in the process of closing the landfill, and we’ll probably have it closed within a few more years,” Harmon said. “We should be able to use it at least a couple more years for leaves which we can plow into the ground to make topsoil, which will help cover it.
“DHEC requires two feet of dirt be put on top of the landfill when it is closed,” he said. “They (Ray Lemons) will provide us with 75 truckloads of dirt toward building that top layer.”
Sidewalk Replacement
Residents of five city streets will soon have new sidewalks.
Council voted unanimously to award the bid for the sidewalk removal and replacement project to Ray Lemons Bulldozing of Jonesville for $20,665.50.
The project will include the removal old sidewalks and the installation of new ones along Church, Pine, Pinckney, South Hart, and Lybrand streets.
Harmon said the project will be funded with $20,000 in C Funds the city requested and received from the Union County Transportation Committee. He said the balance of the cost will be provided by the city.
In addition, Harmon said the city will be doing some other sidewalk replacement projects in the near future along other city street including O’Shields Street. He said those projects will be financed with city funds.
Streets Resurfaced
While they won’t be getting new sidewalks, residents of seven other city streets will be getting their streets resurfaced.
Council voted to award the bid for the resurfacing to Sailors Paving of Union for $116,631.50.
Harmon said the project, which will also be funded with C Funds the city requested and received from the transportation committee, will involve the resurfacing of O’Shields, Bailey and Coleman streets; Arch, Aqua and Poppy lanes; and Callahan Road.
