WOODRUFF – The Union County JV football team earned its first win of the season on Thursday night by besting the Woodruff Wolverines 42-34.

Union County got on the board first with a 40-yard touchdown pass from play caller Matthew Barnett to Montray Feaster. The PAT by Eric Guinn gave the Jackets a 7-0 lead. Woodruff wasted no time coming back on the offensive, running for a 30-yard touchdown. The PAT was good, knotting the two teams at 7-7.

Union County found the end zone on an 85-yard kick-off return by Michael Guinn. The PAT by Eric Guinn after took the Yellow Jackets into the lead at 14-7. Woodruff found paydirt on a 5-yard touchdown run and successful PAT, coming even with Union County to end the first quarter at a 14-14 tie.

In the second quarter, DeJuan Shell intercepted the ball to set up Union County’s Barnett for a touchdown scamper into the end zone. The PAT after was good, giving the Yellow Jackets a 21-14 lead. Woodruff answered with a 5-yard touchdown run but the PAT was blocked. The first half ended with UCHS taking a 21-20 lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Wolverines struck first with a 15-yard touchdown pass and the PAT after gave Woodruff a 27-21 lead over UCHS. Barnett and his receivers answered with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Feaster but the missed PAT knotted the score at 27-27. The Wolverines and the Yellow Jackets then traded points for the rest of the third, Woodruff striking first with a 5-yard run. The PAT was good, giving Woodruff a 34-27 lead over the Jackets. Christian Petty then got the Yellow Jackets back into the end zone with an 8-yard run and the PAT afterward took the game into a tie again at 34-34.

Barnett and Feaster connected again on a 45-yard touchdown run then Barnett put the game away with a successful two-point conversion, giving the Yellow Jackets a 42-34 win.
