UNION — Hello? Is this thing on? Ahem … Welcome to this week’s edition of Pigskin Pick ‘Em brought to you proudly by The Union Daily Times. In addition to a guest picker this week — Charles Lott Sr. — sports editor Tiffany Grady-Hudgins has left this week’s column in the hands of the new general manager of The Union Daily Times: me.
Not to fear: I have seen my fair share of Pigskin Pick ‘Em contests, even participated in a few over the years and have been known to knock on the door of the top spot. My allegiance to Clemson, the University of Georgia and Greenwood High School have not always been kind to me.
But back to our guest picker this week. Mr. Lott wanted us to make sure everyone knows he is not intimidated by Doc Lipsey, the panel’s top picker.
“I’m taking his crown this week,” Lott said, laughing. “Good thing he has that sports medicine thing to fall back on because his picking skills need some work.”
Tiffany and Sam Phipps are knotted in third position this week, tied with 39 overall wins and 12 losses. Steven Addis is in second with a 40-11 overall record while Kevin Shropshire is dragging up the rear at 37-15. I heard Tiffany mumbling something about Sam attending an NFL Referee Night School being offered through Florida State.
Anyway, Sam and Tiffany are tied because Tiffany — who, unbelievably, is a bigger Clemson fan than my nephew — entered her pick in the Florida State-Clemson game as Clemson but accidentally entered Florida State for Sam. He had chosen Clemson. I say we go back to the tape on that one, though. Personally, I think she was just trying to help the guy out. Apparently his aspirations to become an NFL referee have been put on hold for now.
But, back to the picks for this week. The picks for the Union versus Woodruff game are split right down the middle. Steve Taneyhill’s Yellow Jackets are on the road this week but here’s hoping they can skin those Wolverines on the gridiron.
The game I am most interested in is the Tennessee-Georgia match up: Having lived in Georgia for nine years, I developed a fondness for the Bulldogs. Despite the fact that Tennessee uses orange and white as its colors (I am a Clemson fan, you know), I could never quite get used to seeing a blue tick coon hound roaming the sidelines. Uga, the mascot for Georgia, was much cooler. And when you get between the hedges in Athens, it IS all about being cool.
So there you have it. Tiffany encouraged me to crack some jokes about the pickers and their records, take some blatant jabs at their abilities when it comes to picking winners. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. You see, my brothers always told me that if I was going to get into a tussle and boys were involved, I needed to make sure it was a fair fight. And, quite honestly, Tiffany and I couldn’t round up any more men on such short notice.
Maybe next week, guys.
