CARLISLE — Volunteers and donated food enabled the Town of Carlisle to help more than 100 needy families last Wednesday.

Since 2011, the town, with the assistance of The Potters Storehouse Church in Jonesville, has been distributing food to needy families in the Carlisle community. The church, which has been providing food to the needy of Union for the past four years, provides the town with the food for its distribution program. The food is then distributed by volunteers at the Carlisle Town Hall.

An average of 100 families have been served by the town during previous distributions, but Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn said Tuesday that even more were served this time.

“We distributed food to 124 families,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “They received pastry, bread, oatmeal, grits, crackers, various canned goods like vegetables, peanut butter and meats. It was very successful.”

While The Potters Storehouse provided the food, the distribution was handled by volunteers from the Carlisle community who bagged up the food for distribution to the families served at the event.

Ferguson-Glenn thanked both The Potters Storehouse and the volunteers for making the event and its success possible.

“We’re thankful to The Potters Storehouse for the food they donated,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We’re thankful to the volunteers for their hard work. Without The Potters Storehouse and the residents of this community who volunteered we couldn’t provide this service.”

Ferguson-Glenn said there will be no food distributions in October. The town will, however hold food distributions in November and December near Thanksgiving and Christmas, respectively. She said this will be to ensure that the needy of the Carlisle community are able to have food for the holidays.
