UNION — Union County quarterback Keiston Smith is rated one of the top prospects in the 2013 recruiting class and on Friday night, once again, he proved why, leading the Yellow Jackets to a 35-28 come from behind road win over Newberry.

“Keiston, again, was bigtime,” said Union County Head Coach Steve Taneyhill. “His abililty to extend the play resulted in some big things.”

The 6’2, 235-pound signal caller is a dual threat who makes highlight reel plays with his arm and also does much of Union County’s legwork. On Friday, Smith completed 17 of 36 passes for 331 yards and picked up 101 yards on 13 carries and accounted for five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing).

Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, Damion Jeter played a significant role in handling the Newberry offense.

“Damion made some great-effort-plays on Friday,” said Taneyhill. “His hustle saved us a few times.”

The senior defensive end contributed 10 tackles to help slow down the smash-mouthed Newberry offense.
