UNION — Nearly 40 years after it joined the organization, Brown’s Creek Water Company has been recognized for its achievements by the S.C. Rural Water Association (SCRWA).
Established in 1976, the SCRWA is a non-profit benefit corporation that assists the personnel of public and private water systems in South Carolina. The organization recently held its 36th annual Technical Conference and Exhibit Show in Myrtle Beach.
The event brought together more than 450 water and waste water professionals from across the state, among them Jimmy Teaster, manager of the Brown’s Creek Water Company.
The three-day conference concluded with the Award of Excellence Banquet where awards were given to the state’s top performing systems and personnel. Teaster was one of those honored, being presented with the Water Operator of the Year Award by SCRWA President Bobby Brock.
Teaster said Thursday that the award was the first Brown’s Creek, which has been a member of the SCRWA since it was established, has received from the organization. He said that while he was named Water Operator of the Year, the award actually honors recent achievements by Brown’s Creek.
“It not about me so much as it is the accomplishments of the company in the last few years,” Teaster said. “We’ve moved ahead with updating our billing software. The company originally rented office space, but we purchased our own building at 4287 Lockhart Highway a couple of years ago and we moved into it in the last six months.”
Teaster said these achievements along with the addition of a few new lines, the extension of some existing lines and the constant program of repair and maintenance that keeps the system efficiently operating is due to the hard work Brown’s Creek’s staff and board. He said he accepted the award on their behalf.
“It was for all of them, for all the employees, not just me,” Teaster said. “If it had not been for the rest — the board included — it would not have gotten done. It was an honor to take it on behalf of the other employees and the board.”
Established in 1969, Brown’s Creek serves up to 1,300 customers in the Pea Ridge, Lockhart, Mt. Tabor, Peach Orchard, Woodhaven, and Monarch areas of Union County. The company employs a staff of three, including Teaster who has been employed with Brown’s Creek for the past eight years. As manager, Teaster oversees the day-to-day operations of the water system.
